Maintaining a home computer: fault, memory, SSD, backup
Diagnosing a home computer from its symptoms before replacing parts, fitting memory and an SSD, and setting up backup, router position and a workable desk.

A home computer is maintained by reading its symptoms before buying anything: note when the fault appears, what the machine does at start-up, and what has changed recently. Most faults that look like failure are heat, dust, a loose connector or a worn drive, and each of those leaves a different trace. Work through observation first, replacement last.
Start with the symptom, not the part
A machine that shuts down under load, a machine that beeps and stops, and a machine that runs but feels slow are three different problems, and only one of them is usually the processor. Begin with a visual check: dust on the heatsink fins, a fan that does not turn, cables seated squarely in their sockets. Then listen. A rhythmic rattle suggests a fan bearing; a click repeated at intervals suggests a mechanical drive on its way out. Feel the exhaust air after ten minutes of ordinary work. If it is hot and the case is quiet, the fan curve or the airflow is wrong before any component is.
For a laptop, the same order applies with less room to work. Battery behaviour, charging, and heat under the palm rest narrow the fault before the case is opened. When is it worth fitting more memory?

More memory helps when the machine is short of it, and does nothing when it is not. The sign is a system that stutters when several programs are open, with the drive light active while nothing is being saved. Check the current amount and the number of free slots before ordering. Memory is sold in matched kits for a reason: two modules of the same specification in the correct slots let the board run them together, and mixing sizes or speeds can leave the machine stable but slower than before.
Fit the modules with the power off and the cable out, press until the clips close, and check the seating by eye. If the machine fails to start afterwards, reseat before assuming a faulty module. A board that supports four slots often wants the first pair in the second and fourth, not the first and second; the manual states which.
Does an SSD make an old machine usable again?
Often, yes, and more reliably than memory. A mechanical drive is the slowest part of an older desktop or laptop, and a solid state drive removes the wait at start-up and the pause when a program opens. The gain is largest on a machine that is otherwise sound: adequate memory, a working fan, a screen without faults.
Check the interface before buying. A drive that fits the connector is not always a drive the board can use at full speed, and a laptop may need a particular length or a caddy for the bay. Clone the existing system to the new drive, or install cleanly and copy the data across, then keep the old drive as a spare rather than discarding it. A clean installation is the better route when the old system has years of accumulated software, and it takes an evening rather than a weekend.
Backup, router position and a desk that works
Backup is a routine, not a device. Copy the folders that cannot be recreated, documents and photographs above all, to a second drive on a fixed day, and check that the copy opens. A drive that has never been read back is not a backup. Keep one copy away from the machine, whether that is an external drive in another room or an encrypted copy elsewhere.
Router position decides more about a home connection than the tariff does. Put it high, in the open, away from metal, mirrors and the back of a television, and central to where the computer is used. A router in a cupboard loses more signal than any setting gains.
The desk matters for the same practical reason. The screen at eye height, an arm's length away, with its top edge roughly level with the eyes. Light from the side rather than from behind the screen or directly onto it. Cables routed so that they are not pulled when a chair moves, and a power strip that can be switched off at the end of the day. A machine that is easy to reach is a machine that gets its dust cleared and its fans checked, which is most of maintenance.
What should be checked before replacing a laptop?
Laptops fail in a narrower set of ways. Check the charger and the socket first, then the battery report, then heat. A laptop that runs only on mains, or that charges slowly, is usually a power problem rather than a board problem. A laptop that becomes hot and loud under light work needs its vents cleared and its fan checked before anything is replaced.
Memory and storage are often reachable through a single panel on the underside. Confirm the model's supported memory and drive type before ordering, and keep the screws in order as they come out. If the machine is under warranty, check the terms before opening the case.
Order of work
Observe, then check, then replace. Clear the dust, confirm the temperatures and the noise, test the power supply, and only then consider parts. If memory is short, fit matched modules. If the drive is mechanical and the machine is otherwise sound, fit an SSD and keep the old drive. Set a backup day and read a file back from the copy. Move the router into the open. Set the screen, the light and the cables so that the machine can be worked on without moving furniture. None of this requires a workshop, and all of it postpones the day a computer is replaced for no reason.
A machine kept in working order is one thing; a city read through four fixed points is another. The same habit of attention applies: note what each part does, record the changes, and resist the urge to replace what still functions.
